GROWING SUPPORT FOR CHRONIC LBP RELIEF WITH COX® TECHNIC
Chiropractic researchers and everyday clinical practitioners like your St Peters chiropractor at Old Mill Chiropractic witness the relief of pain and return of function. Some publish their results for all to see! A recently published case report of a 67 year old male veteran dealing with chronic low back pain and pain extending down his right leg occasionally recorded relief with Cox® Technic care. The patient described having this pain for decades. In 4 weeks and 4 visits of flexion distraction treatment along with moist heat and soft-tissue mobilization, he stated improvement in his condition, decreased pain medication usage, and enhanced mobility. (1) That’s a welcome outcome for this back pain sufferer!
WHAT’S UP WITH CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN? Spinal Manipulation’s Help
Chronic low back pain like that explained by the veteran in this case report is very common and can be quite disabling. Spinal manipulation is endorsed for the management of chronic low back in several guidelines backed by such groups as the American Pain Society and the American College of Pain Physicians. (2,3) With chronic low back pain, central sensitization – the effect of repeated nerve stimulation has on the central nervous system - is purported to contribute to chronicity of pain. Spinal manipulation’s benefit may well come from its influence on this sensitization. (4) That is an advantage chronic back pain sufferers can live with.
SPINAL MANIPULATION BETTER FOR CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN…REGARDLESS OF AGE
A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (47 RCTs and 9211 participants) of spinal manipulation care for chronic low back pain described that spinal manipulation produced similar effects to other recommended therapies of chronic low back pain (like exercise and drug therapy), was superior to non-recommended intervention for short-term improvement, and had limited, mild-to-moderate, momentary adverse effects. (5) Another such meta-analysis determined that spinal manipulation appeared to be a good alternative for pain relief and function improvement for chronic low back pain sufferers. (6) In a meta-analysis particularly focused on older (ages 65-91 y/o) chronic low back pain sufferers, the same conclusions were reported: spinal manipulation should be thought to be a positive treatment for the older chronic low back pain sufferer to relieve pain and improve function. (7) Most spinal manipulation is delivered by chiropractors according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. (8) And chiropractors like yours at Old Mill Chiropractic researched and learned more about the delivery of the gentle, non-thrust form of spinal manipulation known as Cox® Technic which well know for its treatment of disc herniation and spinal stenosis pain as well as more routine spinal pain conditions.
