St Peters Chiropractic Exercise Recommendation Benefits for Sleep and Back Pain

February 23, 2021

Exercise. St Peters back pain sufferers hear the recommendation to exercise often. Old Mill Chiropractic recommends it, also. Exercise keeps showing its benefit for low back pain relief and prevention…and a new report shows benefit for better sleep quality!

EXERCISE FOR RELIEF OF THE BURDEN OF LOW BACK PAIN

Low back pain is a burden for the low back pain sufferer, the family, the community, and the healthcare system. Healthcare providers and researchers investigate suggested long-term ways to reduce this problem for whose sufferers’ disability continues. Exercise leads the list of non-invasive, non-drug general recommendations with manual therapy and massage in that list as well. (1) Old Mill Chiropractic is the St Peters back pain specialty clinic that many back pain sufferers visit.

BACK PAIN SPECIALIST’S PLAN FOR BACK PAIN RELIEF ADDS EXERCISE

Countless chronic back pain sufferers take themselves to their primary care practitioners first. It’s a pretty normal experience. Primary care recommendations for chronic low back pain care usually involve exercise, oral prescriptions of NSAIDs and SNRI’s like duloxetine. In research, there is an interesting statistic called “number to treat” which denotes the number of patients with a certain condition who need to undergo the treatment recommendation for 1 of them to get benefit. In this recent study, the number to treat for 1 chronic low back pain patient to report benefit from exercise was 7, from NSAIDs 6, and SNRIs 10. Of these 3 options, exercise was the only intervention that showed continued chronic low back pain relief after the intervention ended and up to 48 weeks later. (2) Exercise is a valued, self-management, non-drug option for chronic low back pain patients. Old Mill Chiropractic always incorporates it in the St Peters chiropractic treatment plan. Exercise puts some control of chronic low back pain in our St Peters chiropractic patients’ hands.

WHAT ABOUT SLEEP AND EXERCISE?

Another advantageous patient-controlled alternative is sleep-and-exercise. Lack of sleep – time and/or quality – is an issue for so many St Peters chiropractic patients. Old Mill Chiropractic often hears our patients talk about sleep difficulties. Sleep is rejuvenating for the body and the mind. Exercise is often prescribed to address sleep and mood issues. An interesting study about the relationship between sleep and exercise highlights some interesting findings in young men and women. There are differences for each! Men who exercised more often reported falling asleep faster, less daytime issues, and less depressive mood. Women who exercised more frequently went to bed earlier, had improved sleep quality, and reported more benefit from sleep, less depressive mood, and less anger. (3) Regular exercise is important for so many issues!
