WHO SMOKES?

Researchers are curious about factors related to smoking. In a review of 7547 patients who underwent back surgery, they discovered that 18% were smokers. The researchers stated that compared to the non-smokers, the smokers were younger, male, nondiabetic, and nonobese. Patients in this group who have coronary artery disease were more liable to be smokers. Smokers who had lumbar spine back surgery presented initially more with leg pain than back pain and disability. Their employment, insurance/uninsured, and education status were also related to smoking status. Interestingly though, smoking status did not influence the disability status one year after back surgery. (1) Altering such risk factors work just as well for smokers and nonsmokers luckily. Old Mill Chiropractic would encourage a St Peters smoker dealing with St Peters back pain to stop smoking.

SMOKING’S EFFECTS ON THE BODY

The body knows what’s good for it…and what’s not. Smoking is not. Studying 2307 smokers and non-smokers, researchers discovered that smoking is most strongly associated with spine pain. Headache, trunk pain and limb pain followed. Active smoking is associated with pain in every part of the body. The spine and head take the brunt of the painful effect though. If a smoker does not like pain, you’ll want to think about stop smoking! (2) Old Mill Chiropractic is with you to back your attempt to stop smoking when you are ready.
